First Dual Enrollment Cohort in RBHS History

First Dual Enrollment Cohort in RBHS History

December 2023

RB’s first-ever Dual Enrollment cohort is wrapping up its first semester of classes! Dual enrollment students earn both high school and college credit from Triton College simultaneously. 11 students are currently enrolled in dual enrollment courses, and 18 students are registered for the 2024-25 school year. RB will offer three new courses to students next year: Education, EMT, and Fire Science.

Criminal Justice students Elizabeth Buchancow and Rosa Rendon spoke at the December 12 Board of Education meeting about their semester in the program. “I’ve always been interested in this field, but I’ve never considered it as an option or to pursue it as a future career,” said Rendon. This collaboration with Triton gives students a glimpse of what the college experience is like and allows them to immerse themselves in courses they may otherwise not have access to. “I’ve had the opportunity to be taught by people who have grand experience in the field,” said Buchancow.

August 2023

On Monday, August 21, 2023, students enrolled in the Dual Enrollment Program had their first day of classes at Triton College. This is the first time in school history that RBHS is participating in the Dual Enrollment program at Triton College. This partnership gives students the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit by taking approved courses on Triton’s campus. Some of the classes students can take include Welding, Criminal Justice, and Health Science, which is part of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program.

“I’m thrilled that we’re expanding opportunities and officially taking students to Triton,” says RBHS Principal Dr. Freytas. “We have students that want to be welders, that want to work in law enforcement, that want to be in nursing, and it’s exciting to see that they’re starting that journey now as opposed to in college.”

According to the Triton College Early College website, The Dual Enrollment Program has several benefits, including transferable college credit, reduction of the number of college classes taken after high school graduation, and the utilization of college resources and services, like the library and tutoring services. These are just some of the perks that come with being a Dual Enrollment student.

Fatina Amer, a senior at RB, is taking the Criminal Justice course offered at Triton and is excited for the opportunities that will come with it.

“I’m really interested in law, and this course was to see if I would be good at it. If it’s something that I like, I’ll pursue it after high school,” said Amer.

Students will go to Triton each morning they have class and come back to school once their Triton class is complete.
