"The following is a Message from Girl Up: Iran has a mandatory hijab law that was enacted in 1981, a law that Iranian women have been protesting for years. Recently, Mahsa Amini was detained by the Iranian Morality Police for being in public without her hijab. In custody, Mahsa suffered a supposed "heart attack" and died days later. But photos and witnesses of Amini in custody and in the hospital support the opinion that her death was not the result of a heart attack. Iranian women have been burning their hijabs as a protest of Amini's death, but the Morality Police's brutality will likely only get worse. As a community, we need to raise awareness about this issue. Keep an eye on the RBHS Girl Up instagram account for information and resources to help advocate for and support Iranian women."
