Illinois Appellate Court Oral Argument Held at Riverside Brookfield High School

On Wednesday, May 1, 2024, the Fifth Division of the Illinois Appellate Court First District heard oral arguments in the appeal of the court case People v. Antoine Reynolds in the Riverside Brookfield High School Auditorium. To our knowledge, Riverside Brookfield High School is the first high school to hold an oral argument hearing for the Illinois Appellate Court. The justices hearing the appeal today were Justice Freddrenna M. Lyle, Justice Mary L. Mikva, and Justice David R. Navarro, a 1986 RBHS graduate. Justice Navarro thought it would be an incredible learning experience for students to witness a real-life oral argument at his alma mater.

After the oral argument concluded, the court justices and attorneys participated in a Q&A session where students asked questions about the justices’ and attorneys’ backgrounds and the judicial system. Thank you to the nearly 350 students who exemplified outstanding behavior during the hearing and Q&A, to our staff for helping coordinate this event for our students, and to the Illinois Appellate Court Justices for their invaluable time and insights.
